Sundar Pichai even declared it to be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9V6tWC4CdFQ?si=624EnYuvli5-3qFM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future of search<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, who\u2019s using it? How often? For which queries? And how is the user experience?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We wanted to know what the early user behavior of AI Mode looked like. We talked to 100 American users and gave them five tasks to perform in a search that gave them access to AI Mode. In this webinar, Farrah Bostic of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedifferenceengine.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Engine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought the data and discussed it with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iPullRank\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> own Mike King and Garrett Sussman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of it was surprising. Other parts were not so surprising. Overall, the answer seemed clear: people just weren\u2019t using AI Mode much. But why?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at the data and see how the user experience for AI Mode is shaping up.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c01c714 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c01c714\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">AI Mode User Behavior Study\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74670ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74670ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, we received data from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarweb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that said over 50% of users tried AI Mode once and then bounced. That was pretty telling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa11599 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"aa11599\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"792\" src=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AI-Mode-retention.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-19982\" alt=\"AI Mode retention\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AI-Mode-retention.jpg 849w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AI-Mode-retention-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AI-Mode-retention-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AI-Mode-retention-768x760.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-245e594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"245e594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really feels like users are still experimenting and haven\u2019t formed consistent habits yet around which tools they use for what,\u201d Farrah said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users are treating AI assistants as research companions instead of search replacements, and only a small minority rely on AI for all queries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven if people are using AI Mode, either they\u2019re getting exactly what they need when they\u2019re searching for it, or they just think it\u2019s garbage compared to the other ways that they can search,\u201d Garrett Sussman said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96de4d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"96de4d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Parameters of the AI Mode Study \n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d77a79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d77a79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this study, 100 people participated in unmoderated interviews, 23 of which had live interviews with Farrah, and were asked to perform five different search exercises. Participants were asked about their use of voice assistants, AI tools, and AI Mode.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also wanted to determine how the availability of AI search tools impact people\u2019s search results, their satisfaction with those results, and their preference for AI tools over other channels.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recruited a nationally representative sample of users from June 24th to 30th, 2025, to undertake tasks that encapsulated a range of search intents:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informational intent\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local intent<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial intent<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac6d2ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ac6d2ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div introduction of AI Mode in Google search changes user behavior depending on the context of different search types.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-88a193a elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget Some even clicked on sponsored links from popular banks like Chase and Bank of America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the participants were looking for particular words or phrases in their search, like \u201c0% interest\u201d or \u201cno fee\u201d. In general, users liked how everything was laid out in AI Mode but they wanted to easily see the pros and cons of each card, which wasn\u2019t present.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many said they would just go straight to NerdWallet or other sites for this information instead. Also, most knew exactly what they wanted, reducing the need for AI recommendations. Many even skipped the search entirely, going straight to Amazon, Walmart, or their favorite brands.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI Mode often showed lists of stores\/brands instead of products, which disappointed users. They wanted to go into a shopping browsing experience or straight to a brand\u2019s website as quickly as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-236f76b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"236f76b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What We Learned About AI Mode\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b9670f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b9670f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some major takeaways from this study:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Search happens in a lot of places: Google, Reddit, ChatGPT, YouTube, etc. Wherever there is a search bar, people will search.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all searches require a lengthy response.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In location-based and shopping-based searches, there is a desire for a visual experience or a map. If they don\u2019t see one or a carousel of products they can click, they will leave.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re comparing products, many users already have go-to sites for comparisons.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI Overviews and AI Mode have a branding problem. Many users didn\u2019t know AIOs were different from AI Mode (as an overview could be within AI Mode). Also, AI Mode doesn\u2019t stand out yet and many users didn\u2019t even notice it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI Mode\u2019s \u201cDive Deeper\u201d button was seen as an irritant and no one clicked on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many users preferred ChatGPT for broader results.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional search is good for quick answers, visual browsing, and location-specific searches.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice assistants are popular with many users.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, AI Mode isn\u2019t quite there yet. There was early interest when it first launched, but that enthusiasm hasn\u2019t been sustained over time. For local or shopping searches, it doesn\u2019t provide the best user experience, but it still seems to be a decent choice for informational searches.
