She believed getting someone\u2019s personal, unbiased experience would be more helpful than what you might learn from someone getting paid to promote a particular card.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For someone working in the finance sector, it can be panic-inducing to hear about the constant changes in search with the growing use of LLMs and the release of AI Mode and AI Overviews. How will you continue to reach potential customers? How can you ensure the right people find your company?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We worked with Farrah Bostic of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedifferenceengine.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Engine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn the search habits of 100 participants, and Farrah spoke one-on-one with 23 users specifically about AI Mode and watched them perform searches in real time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants ranged in age from 18 to 75 with a balanced mix of ethnic backgrounds, genders, education levels, and locations across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each user walked through five different queries:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out which credit cards offer the best loyalty programs.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out which kinds of breakfast cereals are healthiest for children.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out the top news or sports headlines in your local area.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a health clinic in your area.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a pair of shoes to wear indoors for under $75.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7fca75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d7fca75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked-1024x572.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-20103\" alt=\"AI Mode study tasks\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked-1536x859.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/What-We-Asked.jpg 1812w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74670ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74670ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the people who participated in the study had their own preferred ways of searching and a particular search channel to which they remain devoted, even with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/how-ai-mode-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduction of AI Mode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But after using it, many were enthusiastic about what AI Mode offered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll eventually go through the results of all five of the tasks in greater detail. Right now, we\u2019re going to do a deep dive into task #1: how participants researched credit card loyalty programs. The patterns we see emerging can impact how prospective customers will find certain organizations in the finance industry in AI Mode in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91703dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"91703dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Overall Data from the AI Mode Study\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-245e594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"245e594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some general findings from this particular task in our study:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52% were shown AI Mode as an option in the unmoderated task; in the live interviews, almost all had AI Mode visible (either from the initial google.com search bar, or once they got into search as a tab, or as the dive deeper button from AI Overviews)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% used AI Mode<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33 seconds was the average dwell time in AI Mode<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38% engaged with AI Overviews<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55.3% of those who engaged with AI Overviews unfurled them<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14.3% of those who unfurled AI Overviews also clicked on the links within it<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average number of links clicked: 1.09<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average time to complete the task: 2 minutes and 7 seconds<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average score for ease: 4.27 out of 5<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average score for satisfaction: 3.85 out of 5<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical search terms participants used in this study include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14.6% framed searches as questions (\u201cWhat,\u201d \u201cWhich\u201d)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% began with \u201cbest\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.25% included \u201c2025\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% asked for direct comparisons (\u201ccompare credit card loyalty programs\u201d)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.5% refined with \u201cpoints\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% used follow-ups, often naming a card, adding \u201cbest,\u201d \u201cno fee,\u201d or \u201cfor travel\u201d<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked how often participants use AI-based services, more than half said daily, and only two users stated they rarely or didn\u2019t use AI at all. The rest said weekly, so it\u2019s clear that AI has worked its way into many people\u2019s routines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96de4d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"96de4d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Using AI Mode to Research Credit Cards\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d77a79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d77a79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the one-on-one interviews, participants could choose whether to start with AI Mode on their own, and 6 out of 23 did. Those who did not choose to start with AI Mode were subsequently prompted to use it to compare search results.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the positive reactions to AI Mode:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, users seemed to appreciate AI Mode&#8217;s ability to summarize complex financial information and present options in a more digestible format, often including pros and cons or key features.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants valued seeing annual fees, cost per year, pros and cons, and categories for earning points laid out directly in the AI Mode results<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They especially liked receiving side-by-side comparisons or having categories broken down (e.g., travel rewards, cash back).\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some also remarked that they liked how AI Mode tried to break down \u201chow to think about\u201d the category, and that it depends on the customer\u2019s goals\/behavior, helping them figure out what kind of loyalty program would be best for them.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability to ask follow-up questions within AI mode (like &#8220;side-by-side comparison&#8221; or refining criteria) was highly valued by those who discovered it, though it was not consistently available or functional across all users.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the fact that side-by-side comparisons with apples-to-apples categories are what people expect to get when shopping for a credit card, this style was expected from personal finance websites.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, many preferred visiting traditional websites (NerdWallet, Forbes, Motley Fool) for credit card comparisons due to perceived greater accuracy, timeliness, or trust in established financial sources.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was also some confusion or sense of redundancy when some users first saw AI Overviews and then clicked \u201cdive deeper\u201d with AI Mode. The AI Mode result often does not seem different or more comprehensive than the AI Overview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc14015 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"bc14015\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a1e394 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2a1e394\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">AI Mode User Search Patterns and Reactions\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6a9931 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b6a9931\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When one user was prompted to research credit cards with the best loyalty programs, she immediately said, \u201cThat\u2019s an AI question,\u201d and went right into AI Mode because she believed it worked better.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think AI has a way of analyzing the information that I\u2019m looking for to give me the answers,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another participant who typically uses ChatGPT also had positive feedback about AI Mode.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it does the same thing, if not better, than ChatGPT because it provides the links and the visuals,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5968ce9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5968ce9\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55b77e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"55b77e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Search Channel Preferences\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a834b68 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a834b68\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d90c1d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d90c1d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the study participants had preferences for which search channel on which to start their search. They varied greatly from LLMs to social media.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One user started the search on TikTok, as she liked seeing real-life comparisons and hearing people\u2019s opinions in real time<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another used Grok.
