Though unsure at first how AI Mode would contribute more than was already provided by AI Overviews, she\u2019s officially been converted and will be using it more in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am pleasantly surprised,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We saw many interesting reactions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/ai-mode-ux-webinar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI Mode in our study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Farrah Bostic of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedifferenceengine.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Engine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn the search habits of average people. For those in the ecommerce industry, the patterns emerging may give you a taste of what the future of search will look like for your prospective customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91703dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"91703dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Overall Data from the AI Mode Study\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-245e594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"245e594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the general findings from task #2 in our survey:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% were shown AI Mode as an option for this search\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% used AI Mode in the unmoderated task; no one in the live interviews used AI mode unprompted for this task.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33 seconds was the average dwell time in AI Mode<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47% engaged with AI Overviews<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76.6% of those who engaged with AI Overviews unfurled them<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of those who engaged with AI Overviews clicked on links within it<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average number of links clicked: 1.96<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average time to complete the task: 2 minutes, 7 seconds<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average score for ease: 4.05<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average score for satisfaction: 4.05<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some typical search terms participants used in this study:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% of participants phrased their search as a question<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users also refined their search terms with more specific keywords like \u201cbest\u201d or \u201cgood\u201d (as opposed to healthiest \/healthy \/most healthy), or \u201ckid-friendly\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some also specified qualities like \u201cwith protein\u201d or \u201corganic\u201d<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, AI Mode was considered useful for summarizing nutritional guidelines and recommending brands for healthy cereals. Users also appreciated being offered a way of thinking about what constitutes a healthy breakfast cereal for kids, noting characteristics like fiber, low\/no sugar, and no food dyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users consistently noted that for groceries like cereal, they would typically shop in person at a grocery store rather than purchasing online through search results. However, participants valued AI&#8217;s ability to synthesize information from multiple sources (blogs, articles) to provide a comprehensive answer, saving them time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three participants in the live interviews felt the most likely scenario for them in a search like this would be to compare options in-person at a grocery store rather than searching online. And almost all participants said their most likely next step would be to purchase cereal in-store rather than online.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96de4d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"96de4d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Using AI Mode to Research Breakfast Cereals\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d77a79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d77a79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One participant in the study who typically uses ChatGPT decided to use AI Mode first to search for the healthiest breakfast cereals for children. She believed that AI opens up a wider and broader search, and is more reliable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know it\u2019s going to scan the research to give me the information that I\u2019m looking for versus if I just would have Googled it,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, she was disappointed because she had to scroll pretty far down in AI Mode to get to the actual cereal brand names. He would\u2019ve preferred the order to be reversed. And if he has additional questions he will click \u201cdive deeper\u201d and ask AI Mode follow-up questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another user said there was some overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode, but AI Mode is more detailed. Instead of querying and then having to read a bunch of top 10 listicles and making comparisons himself, AI Mode could handle that for him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he said he wouldn\u2019t use AI Mode for quick facts, like researching the population of a country or the age of a celebrity, because Google still has that perfected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a1e394 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2a1e394\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">User Search Preferences\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6a9931 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b6a9931\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of participants said they would typically skip this type of query in favor of an in-person visit to the grocery store to compare ingredients. Or they would just do minimal research first before going to the store.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would probably just research this and then make a mental note for the next time I\u2019m at the grocery store,\u201d one user said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some would even go to their local grocery store\u2019s website or Instacart instead. And with the addition of AI Mode, shoppers have a new way to find products, even if the information displayed doesn\u2019t always feel natural or follow the format of how people shop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecommerce teams should consider the growing importance of comprehensive product information that can be easily parsed by AI systems, as users increasingly rely on AI to filter through multiple sources and compare products. However, the study also highlights that despite AI&#8217;s ability to provide detailed product insights, the purchase journey for many food products still culminates offline.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While AI Mode shows promise, the reality is that most users still prefer the experience of in-store shopping for everyday items like groceries. Will that change as people become more familiar with these AI Search platforms? It&#8217;s difficult to determine. But only a certain type of person would jump through these research hoops to find a healthy breakfast cereal.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unpredictable nature of AI Mode results also shows the importance of strong SEO fundamentals alongside emerging AI optimization strategies, especially as users begin using AI Mode more often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the one participant using AI Mode for the first time in this study, even though using Google is still a habit, she may start using AI Mode from now
